Today was our day for exploring the island, on foot. The weather had improved slightly, and was intended to improve further, so we set the following day aside for the Great Barrier Reef. Off we went, ready for a walk, after breakfast.
The island was covered in jungle at sea level....
As we started to climb, the views were lovely.
Eventually we made it up to a lighthouse, high on a promontory.
We had done quite well, so we decided to carry on, up to the summit of the island....
At the very top of the Island, we met 2 new friends, Ange and Jules, both originally from Yorks. Ange now lives in Perth,. We spent several meal times together after this, and they were great company!!!
Then it was time for the long descent back down. It was much easier than going up!
We had a good view of our resort, and saw lots more wildlife....
Soon through the trees, we came back to our resort, right at the side of the jungle.
It was unusual how the resort nestled right under the edge of the rainforest.
After a shower, we joined a visit to the nearby Turtle sanctuary, where turtles are nursed back to health before release, following treatment.
Azri (the Turtle man) told us that the injuries are mainly malnutrition due to damage to their shrinking environment, ingestion of plastics, and sometimes injury from boat propellers, or shark attack, or being trapped in fishing nets.
Most of the turtles in the area are Green Turtles.
We ended the day with a return to Foxy's Bar.
